Description:

Quality Nursing Education: Linking the Curriculum to Program Assessment

This workshop will examine the essential elements of a nursing curriculum that reflect quality education. The participant will have an opportunity to share their curriculum challenges with other colleagues, critique their student learning and program outcomes and link these to quality indicators for nursing programs. Participants will also critique or begin developing a systematic plan for evaluation to ensure data regarding the quality of the program are available to faculty to inform program decision-making to improve the curriculum and learning achievement. Participants should bring a list of their end-of-program student learning outcomes and systematic plan of evaluation. Graduate programs would also want to bring a list of their role-specific nursing competencies for each program option.

Objectives:

  • Discuss the key curriculum and assessment elements in a quality nursing curriculum.
  • Discuss the importance and components of having a systematic plan for evaluation to assess the overall program.
  • Discuss the importance of identifying student learning outcomes for the curriculum and ensuring the student learning outcomes are measurable.
  • Critique the current student learning outcomes for your nursing program.
  • Discuss how evaluation methods should align with the student learning outcomes.
  • Discuss the use of direct and indirect methods for student learning and program assessment.
  • Develop/Critique a systematic plan for evaluation.
