At Bryant & Stratton College (BSC) Virginia Beach Campus, our unwavering commitment to being a champion of students drives every decision we make and every initiative we undertake. We believe that empowering our students academically, professionally, and personally is the cornerstone of their success and the future of quality healthcare. This student-centered philosophy aligns seamlessly with the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) standards, which emphasize continuous improvement, accountability, and educational excellence. Our journey toward and maintenance of ACEN accreditation for our Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program has strengthened this commitment, enhancing student outcomes, enriching the learning environment, and preparing graduates to thrive as compassionate, competent nursing professionals. Building on this foundation, we are now seeking ACEN accreditation for our Practical Nursing (PN) program to extend the same level of quality and support to a broader student population.

Elevating Programmatic Outcomes

Maintaining ACEN accreditation has been pivotal in improving our programmatic outcomes. Our ADN program’s NCLEX pass rates have consistently improved, culminating in a 97.67% first-time pass rate in 2024 and currently 100% pass rate for 2025. This success stems from a comprehensive approach to student support, including individualized advisement, tailored remediation plans, and robust NCLEX preparation boot camps. The pre- and post-graduation boot camp initiative, featuring  ATI’s Virtual ATI (VATI) program, ensures that students are well-prepared for the licensure exam. By fostering collaboration between faculty and students and offering both in-person and virtual review sessions, we have enhanced student accountability and improved pass rates from 68.2% in 2019 to nearly 98% in 2024.

Job placement rates have also seen substantial gains. Our partnerships with local healthcare facilities and community organizations have facilitated seamless student transitions from graduation to employment, with most graduates securing positions before and shortly after passing the NCLEX. These outcomes are a direct reflection of the accountability and continuous assessment demanded by the ACEN standards. We are committed to replicating these successful strategies in our PN program as we pursue ACEN accreditation, ensuring that practical nursing students experience the same level of excellence.

Enhancing the Quality of Education

Accreditation has catalyzed significant advancements in our curriculum and faculty development. Faculty members undergo rigorous orientation and mentorship programs, ensuring new instructors whether experienced educators or industry practitioners receive comprehensive training. A structured mentorship toolkit and mandatory clinical orientations equip faculty with the skills to provide high-quality instruction. Weekly faculty meetings allow for continuous curriculum evaluation, ensuring alignment with the latest industry standards and technological advancements.

Curriculum revisions have embraced active learning strategies, moving beyond traditional lectures to incorporate flipped classrooms, guest speakers, field trips, tail gate lectures outside of the classroom, simulation labs, and interprofessional education opportunities. These initiatives cultivate critical thinking, clinical judgment, and decision-making skills core competencies required for modern nursing practice. Integrating technology through simulated patient scenarios and Next Gen NCLEX (NGN) preparation enhances the student learning experience and ensures readiness for real-world clinical environments.

Fostering Professional and Interpersonal Growth

As champions of student success, we recognize that nursing education extends beyond textbooks and clinical skills it involves holistic development. Our students actively participate in the Student Nursing Organization (SNO) and Organization for Associate Degree Nursing (OADN) Zeta Zeta Chapter Honor Nursing Society. These organizations provide leadership opportunities, community engagement experiences, and avenues for professional growth. Through participation in conferences, service projects, and leadership roles, students develop essential soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and ethical decision-making.

Student involvement in SNO and OADN is integral to our program’s transformation. By collaborating with faculty and administration, students play an active role in shaping curriculum enhancements, clinical experiences, and program policies. Their voices help drive changes that align with educational best practices and the evolving needs of the healthcare industry. This active participation not only enhances interpersonal growth but is essential to maintaining the quality of our program and fostering a sense of ownership and pride in their education.

Strengthening Community Partnerships

ACEN accreditation has reinforced our commitment to community engagement. Our Nursing Advisory Board, which includes local healthcare leaders, alumni, students, and faculty, plays a crucial role in shaping the program to meet community needs. Annual advisory meetings provide valuable insights into industry trends, graduate performance, and community expectations. Feedback from clinical partners has led to initiatives such as soft-skills training and enhanced clinical placements.

Our partnerships extend beyond clinical training to include collaborative community health initiatives that include preceptorship program with the Virginia Department of  Health, ongoing commitment with Union mission to serve the homeless, annual participation with the Sentara Hospital System Flu Drive, active participants in health fairs with Celebrate Healthcare events,  job placement opportunities, and ongoing professional development for graduates. Engaging with local employers ensures our curriculum remains relevant, addressing both the immediate needs of the healthcare workforce and long-term public health goals.

Recruiting and Retaining Faculty Excellence

A student centered; compassionate, qualified faculty is the backbone of any successful program. ACEN accreditation has facilitated the recruitment and retention of experienced nurse educators by promoting a culture of continuous professional growth. Faculty members are encouraged to pursue advanced degrees, attend national conferences, and engage in scholarly activities. The structured workload distribution ensures faculty have sufficient time for teaching, advising, and personal development, leading to improved job satisfaction and retention.

Investments in faculty development have paid dividends in the classroom and clinical settings. Faculty who are well-supported professionally can better mentor students, fostering an environment where both educators and learners thrive. This commitment extends to our PN program, where we aim to mirror the same faculty’s excellence.

Looking Ahead

Achieving and maintaining ACEN accreditation is an ongoing journey a commitment to excellence that transcends compliance. For the BSC Virginia Beach ADN program, it has been a catalyst for transformative change, reflected in improved student outcomes, innovative educational practices, stronger community connections, and a dedicated faculty team. By prioritizing quality education, fostering community partnerships, and investing in our faculty and students, we aim to prepare compassionate, competent nurses ready to meet the evolving needs of healthcare. Through active student involvement in professional organizations and continuous faculty development, we are not just raising the bar we are setting new standards in nursing education. Together, with ACEN as our partner in excellence, we remain steadfast in our mission to champion the success of every student.
